Kim’s voice is so sensual that she could sing a grocery list and have you down on your knees, pledging eternal devotion to Kellogg’s Corn Flakes and hopefully something more organic. The music of Ben Leinbach, excerpted from his Spirit of Yoga disc, has already received praise in these pages: Yallop wisely uses it as background to his meditation as well as a solo track. Add in Benjamin Iobst’s Singing Bowls of Tibet and other beautiful offerings from Devakant and Gary Malkin, and you’ve got a collection as ideally suited to dinner by candlelight as for contemplation, meditation, and just plain daydreaming.

Transforming Your Depression Into Good Mood With Yoga

We are told that exercises, among them yoga, biking, brisk walking or jogging, can take us out of depression. We even hear disparaging comments so many times that we start wondering if it is merely the judgment of those who prefer to say that? Or perhaps these pronouncements are supported by facts and confirmed scientific research designating exercise as a real boost to the “victims” of depression symptoms?

 In reality, there have been considerable research affirming exercises like yoga (and other forms) to be one way of curing depression. The 2008 Summary of the Physical Activity Guidelines published by the Department of Health and Human Services, in its summary, states that there are indeed so many researches done that claim those who have a regular exercise routine have a much positive attitude and report a decrease in the symptoms of depression. Simultaneously, be cautious about deciding on the exercise form you will practice regularly. It is not any specific technique that is crucial as much as what you are most comfortable in. A yoga expert recommends finding a yoga mentor who can “make you feel, when you walk out the door, like your life has changed in that moment. That you are recharged and upbeat.”

Yoga beginners are advised not to radically change their current medications. Regardless of seeing positive changes soon after, it is advisable to wait for at least 9 months of consistent yoga performance before considering quitting on your current prescribed anti-depressants.

There are many different forms of yoga – some more physical, some highly spiritual. Overall, yoga is good for stress-related illness, fatigue, migraine, depression, PMS, arthritis, back pain, ageing, and mobility problems.

Decide why you want to start yoga and then choose an appropriate form. The principles of yoga is fairly simple – relax, switch off and stretch, and you’ll feel better.

If you want to get fit…

* Hatha yoga – based on controlled stretching, with an emphasis on developing a flexible spine. Good for all level of fitness.

* Vini yoga – usually taught individually by a teacher call Desikachar. Vini yoga is safe and gentle and this is exceptionally good for older people.

If you want to get physical…

* Lyenger yoga – focuses on correct postures and often uses blocks and ropes to maintain these.

* Sivananda yoga – suitable for all ages, it covers a wide range of poses from simple to complex.

* Ashtanga yoga – known as power yoga. This form is very demanding and is suitable only for the very fit. But if you want ultra-toned muscles like Madonna, give it a go! ;)

If you want to get spiritual…

* Raja yoga – also known as royal yoga. Tis is more concerned with the mind

* Dru yoga – group yoga which concentrates heavily on breath work
